SBEC second grade students Win with Rhymes

All of the second through fifth grade students in the Accent on Creative Thinking classes at SBEC recently wrote poems about the brain for the Neuroscience for Kids Writing Contest sponsored by the Department of Bioengineering of the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Second grade students Lilly Hunt (Byhalia) and Jacob Pollan (Southaven) won in their division of the national contest. The poems were to focus on either the anatomy of the brain, functions of the brain, drug abuse or brain health and were judged on the basis of originality, scientific accuracy, and overall style. In commenting on their poems, Hunt said, “I have written songs and lots of poems,” but Pollan said, “This was the first poem I have ever written.” The students received a certificate of achievement and a book.

The winning poems are:

The Cerebrum Helps My Body

By Jacob Pollan

The Cerebrum helps me hear and cheer.

It puts my body in high gear.

And on my bike it helps me steer.

My cerebrum works all day and night.

It gets really tired but that’s alright.

Brain Fuel

By Lilly Hunt

Do you know what fuels my brain?

First, let me tell you it runs through your vein.

Glucose, glucose is a sugar so sweet,

That’s always my excuse to eat.

But given a little time,

I can burn fat just fine.

2nd Grade Student Donates Hair to Locks of Love

SBEC 2nd grade student Hannah Willard, Southaven, had never had her hair cut until January 2 when she donated 13 inches of hair, enough for two wigs, to Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term hair loss due to any medical condition.

When asked why Hannah wanted to donate her hair, her mother Dana Willard said, “Every year at Christmas, Hannah would give toys, clothes, or different items to children. Hannah said she wanted to help other girls have wigs, “Because my friend, Hadie Sowell, (3rd grade) donated her hair last year through the Locks of Love program.”

This year, she decided to give her hair.” Hannah said she wanted to help

On January 2, 2008, Hannah and her mother went to the Cabello Salon II at 5627 Getwell Road, Southaven, to have her hair cut and prepared to be sent to Locks of Love. In commenting on the experience, Hannah said “I liked getting my first hair cut. I also like shorter hair better than my long hair.”

JOSH MCDOWELL TO SPEAK AT SBEC ON JANUARY 17, 2008

Noted author and speaker Josh McDowell will speak to students at SBEC on Thursday, January 17, from 8:30 - 11:30 AM and to parents and adults on the SBEC campus from 6:30 – 9:30 PM on key issues facing young people.

McDowell has been an international traveling representative for Campus Crusade for Christ, speaking to more than ten million young people in 84 countries, including more than 700 university and college campuses. Further, he has authored or co-authored more than 100 books and workbooks, with more than 42 million in print worldwide.

McDowell says, “The greatest determining factor that puts young people at risk today is not divorced homes, family abuse, peer pressure or adult alienation—it’s a lack of a solid biblical belief system.” Studies show that young people who hold a distorted view about Christianity are more likely to engage in criminal activity, be resentful of others, and attempt suicide.

The evening presentation to parents and adults is free to the public, but tickets for admittance must be secured from SBEC, 7400 Getwell Road, Southaven, MS, 38672 or by calling 662.349.5068. McDowell will discuss how to keep the culture from influencing young people, how to instill a life-changing faith in your child, and how to build deep and enduring relationships in your family.
