Volunteer Matters
Teacher Appreciation
Let’s
shower them with notes of appreciation!
Please consider taking the time for
you and / or your child to write any teacher or faculty member a personal note
of appreciation for their time and service to your child or the school. Please put your note in an envelope and
label it with the faculty member’s name and grade or office. There will be a box in the front lobby the
week of 5/5-5/9 for all notes to be deposited.
We will deliver the notes to the faculty for you by the end of the
week. Remember you and your children can write a note to as many teachers /
faculty members, past or present, that you would like to thank or encourage!
Please Note - None of this week’s activities are designed
to be in lieu of or in conjunction with any of the special plans or activities
that room moms / grade parents typically arrange for the end of year activities. These activities are all in addition to and
able to be provided by the PTSF because of your participation in our grocery
card program. THANK YOU!
PTSF Leadership – Would You
be the One?
Volunteers do not necessarily
have the time; they just have the heart.
The PTSF is very excited about the opportunities we have in
serving our students, teachers and families next year. We need a few more new folks to help us do
that. Would you be one?
PTSF Leadership Changes / Needs
The following committees need team members:
Membership
Team - Student directory design, distribution and Membership listing data
management.
Teacher Appreciation
Team – Monthly luncheons, lunchroom duty helpers, Teachers Appreciation
week committee, and teacher volunteer helpers.
Communications Team
– Manage bulletin board announcements, Wednesday folder inserts,
PTSF e-mail, InTouch and webpage content.
Money Matters Team - grocery card program,
used uniforms, recycling program, meeting sponsors, etc.
Family Matters Team
– new family / student program, clubs, community resource info for families,
etc.
Some positions only require a couple hours a month while
others require more time. Please consider
joining the fun and rewarding PTSF service team! A tentative strategic planning lunch meeting
is scheduled for June 9th. If you are
interested please contact Kimberly Medlock or Berit
Faust. Just a quick e-mail if you are
interested would be appreciated. Kimberly@kimberlymedlock.com
or BMFaust@gmail.com
THANKS
If lots of people each do a little together we get great things done!

Test Drive Cars ... Not People
“Sexual Revolution”
Saturday night, May 17th at the
DeSoto Civic Center.
6pm – 9pm ( doors open at 5pm )
Did you know that MS now ranks #3 in the nation in teenage
pregnancies and STD’s? Did you know
that 1 in 4 in our community now has a STD?
These numbers should alarm you.
The fact is, if your family hasn’t already been touched with either of
these issues; the chances are that it will sooner or later.
Pam Stenzel, founder of Enlighten
Communications, Inc., tackles today’s tough sexual issues amongst youth with
candor, insight, humor and the challenge for young people to get the abstinence
advantage. The event is FREE and
there will be many giveaways, including
a car, iPods, gift certificates and more. The attendance goal is at least 7,000 youth
ages 13-24! Many caring local
businesses, churches, families and ministries are sponsoring this event. This
could have an enormously powerfully affect on our community!
If you would like to help by donating prizes, bibles or serve as
a counselor, greeter or would like posters to help promote the event please
contact Kimberly Medlock as soon as possible Kimberly@kimberlymedlock.com.
If you have kids 13-24
and / or have influence with youth groups, teams, clubs, etc. please do all you
can to encourage our young people to attend this event.
Golf Tournament to benefit the Hemophilia Foundation
One of our students has hemophilia. There will be a golf tournament to benefit the
Hemophilia Foundation on 6/23/08 with lots of fun and prizes. If you are interested in playing or helping
please contact Cindy at 901-359-8393.
Family Watchdog – Tools to keep our families Safe
http://www.familywatchdog.us/
- This site was developed by John Walsh from Americas Most Wanted.
When you visit this site, enter your address and a map will
pop up with your home as a small icon of a house. Red, blue and green
dots may appear around your neighborhood. Click on these dots and a picture of
a criminal will appear with his or her address and a description of the crime
they have committed. This is another tool we can use to keep our kids safe.

Business Listings for next year’s SBEC Student
Directory
We will again feature the special SBEC family “yellow
pages”. This is a special business card
advertisement section of the directory that allows fellow SBEC families to know
whom to call when services are needed.
HUNDREDS of these directories will be distributed. The cost to be included in the directory is
only $25. You can send in your business
card and check made out to SBEC PTSF in a labeled envelope to Elizabeth Jenkins
in the HS office.
Do you have a summer job for our
students?
If so, we will be posting job opportunities for qualified
students soon. This could be for the business or the home. The deadline to have jobs posted is May 9th. Please drop off your listing at the High
School office.
Used Uniform Donations
If you would like to donate your good condition school uniform
pieces to the PTSF for reselling, then please put the items in a bag labeled
as a donation and drop off in the lost & found bin in the front
lobby.

ELEMENTARY ATHLETICS FROM COACH SHERRI HOWARD
COACH PITCH/T-BALL
The trophies are in and I
will start getting those to your coaches.
Each coach and team will decide where and when to hand them out. I’m not sure if the pictures will be back
before your last game, if not, we will get them handed out through your child’s
classroom teacher.
Remember in case of bad
weather to call the elementary sports hotline, NOT the office! The hotline is updated by 2pm on weekdays and
by 8:30am on Saturdays.

JUST A THOUGHT
In this world of instant
coffee, instant food, instant credit, and high speed access, it has become
increasingly difficult to teach ourselves, much less our children to wait. We have seemed to have forgotten the old
saying, “Good things come to those who wait.”
Athletes are beginning to
get drawn into this way of thinking.
They don’t want to wait for their skills to develop, they want to play
now, the way they know how to—NOW! The
truth is developing skill takes hard work and TIME. Athletes also have to change and adapt
different skills and techniques for the coach they play for.
Each coach has a plan to fit
his vision for the team and personnel he has.
Players often fight changing technique because they feel awkward and not
as self assured with it. They want to do
it the way they feel more comfortable or natural because they are impatient and
unwilling to wait for the new skill to take hold.
The athlete will tend to get
upset with the coach for wanting them to change. The athlete will say the coach doesn’t know
what he is talking about. They feel the
skills they have work just fine. To
choose their way over the coach’s is the kind of disrespectful attitude that
runs rampant through teams, and usually causes the athlete to end up on the
bench.
A big part of being an
athlete is having the ability to adapt and change. To be able to improve their skill every day
is the mark of a champion. To continue
down the same path of the same old skill, same old way may get them where
they’re going for now, but others will blow by them and surpass them in the
end. It’s the ones with open hearts that
are patient, who try to change that will end up the champion.
Christians also have this
dilemma. Do we stay on the easy path
with everyone else and just coast in when this life is over? Or do we work and strive to improve
ourselves? Do we quit blaming others for
our pain and problems or do we take the opportunity to learn from our pain to
make our Christian skills stronger? Do
we rely on the skills the world has taught us, or do we show a respectful
attitude to our Lord and work on the skills He has shown us?
God is our coach and He has
a plan for each step we take. We may not
see it, or understand it, but we should work on the skills we need to put us on
the path He has set before us. We have a
choice to sit on the bench and complain, or we can work hard to get into the
game. The choice has always been our way
or His.
“The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand
everything along the way?”
Proverbs 20:24
